Life in Viroqua from the Vernon County Censor:

Viroqua

NOV. 24, 1920

It will be very hearting news to the citizens of Viroqua and vicinity to know that the hospital commission held a meeting Friday evening and decided to go ahead with the funds on hand and start construction in the spring. The commission was very enthusiastic over the proposition, and Mayor Roseland was selected to look over the plans and specifications, and see if further economics could not be effected. It is expected that the new bids will be at least 25 per cent below those of last year.

Details of a big business deal are about completed, whereby the L.C. Colman Lumber Company purchases from John W. Thayer his stock of lumber located east of the creamery, and the real estate from Luther M. Roseland, where he formerly conducted his lumber yard.

A new gas car has been ordered by the Southeastern and is expected to be in service next week. It will seat forty-four people and will have all the modern conveniences, such as air brakes, etc. The steam car tried out some time ago was rejected as unsatisfactory.

All wool underwear for men in two pieces or union. Stoll & Groves.

Two revenue men visited our five saloons yesterday, but did not find any liquor, so we understand. They ordered those who had “Wine of Pepsin” to send it back where they got it, claiming it is unlawful to sell it. The revenue men said they would not prosecute this time, but did not want the stuff to be on hand the next time they called. “Wine of Pepsin”, an intoxicating medicine had a big sale here, it is said. – Cashton Record.

Vernon county board of supervisors have been rushing things right along... Petitions looking to the keeping open of the state trunk highways during the winter for motor travel were received... It seems that while the law is on the books and nearly everyone ardently desires that it be enforced, it is utterly impossible with the machinery now made to keep the roads open in a real old fashioned winter when the snow reaches the fence tops. One of the southern counties spent $50,0000 last winter and then had to abandon the work.

It is expected that the extending of the LaCrosse Interurban telephone line from Ferryville to Lynxville will be completed this winter.

Isaac Lavold has rented the Goodall barn. He purchased the larger part of the equipment offered at auction, and will run a livery there as in the past.

The Big Holstein-Friesian sale at the sale pavilion on the fair grounds last Wednesday afternoon brought out a fair crowd and fair prices. This afternoon the Guernsey sale is in progress, at the same place...

Dr. J. Schee sent a sample of Westby’s water to Madison to be analyzed. It was found to be in good condition.

Drs. Andrew and Myrick of DeSoto have united their practices, forming a partnership. They will be of more service to the public in this way.

The Redmound store, conducted by Mrs. B.C. Worman and Louis Axlen, has been sold to Alfred Erickson of Purdy and Earl Witcraft of Viroqua. The new proprietors have taken charge and we wish them success.

The damp rainy period commencing Friday night had the effect of bringing tobacco into excellent case in this locality and growers were not slow to avail themselves of the opportunity. Considerable stripping is in progress, but we have not heard of any complete crops being removed from the poles. The good case was not general as no fog accompanied the rain and the location of many sheds is such that fog is necessary for case.

Large size hair nets, all colors, 3 for 35¢ at Rogers’.

A fire alarm at 6:45 Friday evening brought a goodly crowd to Main street in a hustle, only to find that Chief Moe had turned in the alarm to find how quick his fire ladies could respond and have the water going. The big red truck was sending a stream over the farmers’ Bank in record time.

Due to so much mail going astray, we are informed that Grand Rapids, Wisconsin, has changed its name to Wisconsin Rapids.

Ferry between Lansing and DeSoto will make its last trip of the season on November 12.

The Southeastern doodle bug and a Buick car came together on the North Main street crossing Friday morning with the result that the Junebug was derailed and the auto somewhat damaged but able to drive away under its own power. A lady occupant of the machine was quite badly cut.

Harry McGonigle has turned over the Viola livery barn to Denner Lowery who will use it as a feed barn. McGonigle will continue the livery business at his home.

The Hallowe’en carnival at the Normal school Friday afternoon and evening was a most enjoyable affair. Fully five hundred people attended and were entertained by a great variety of stunts prepared for their enjoyment... Incidentally, it netted $225 to apply on the purchase of a phonograph and records.

Boiled water is served with all orders at the Optimo.

Twenty-four cents per length for either stove pipe or elbows is all you have to pay at Clarke & Fehlberg’s. Take advantage of this very attractive price.

A whirlwind victory, a tremendous landslide, a rebuke for eight years of Democratic rule—that’s what happened at the poles [sic] at the state and nation on Tuesday when the straight Republican ticket rode into victory on the wings of a record-breaking majority for the grand old party. Harding and Coolidge will head the nation.

A few evenings ago when Tom Peterson was drawing gasoline for three parties at his Newton store, a fourth party entered the store and stole a quantity of cigarettes and other things. This is not the first time Tom has suffered this way, and the party being seen and well-known, he intends to make it warm for him unless the fellow settles up like a man in a few days.

The abutment for the Sherry bridge in Black Bottom are completed, but the steel for the structure, ordered in January, has not arrived. The temporary bridge went out in the late flood, but was replaced Saturday... Stone is moving livery, as two crushers are now working in the quarry on the Viola road... Tar has been secured and will be applied to the North Main street job.
