Life in Viroqua from the Vernon County Censor:
AUG. 26, 1925
Seems almost like the good old times to see tobacco buying getting under way in Vernon County, and buyers busy as bees riding the growing districts, and inspecting the weed... Although there is some rust and some yellow tobacco, and the crop running streaky in spots, yet t [sic] can be conservatively stated that this year’s crop will run fifty per cent good. It is the best crop which Vernon has seen in at least four years. Last year there was not more than ten per cent of the crop good, and the year before about 25 per cent. There is quite a little tobacco still far from maturity, and a nice rain now, with late frost, will largely increase the crop.
The model school of the county normal will open on Monday, Sept. 7 and all those who are to attend that department should plan to be there on the morning of the 7th. The first grade is full. Other grades will be full if those who attended last year come back again this year... It is possible that some of the grades in the model school will be allowed the use of the new gym this year.
Pleasant Ridge, Aug. 24 We hope to have better roads on the ridge again. The grader is now at work on the road.

A big Klan meeting was held at the Viroqua Fair Grounds on Monday evening of this week, more than a thousand people gathering from all parts of the county...
General crop conditions throughout this section continue to fill the hearts of everyone with rejoicing. The average corn crop is fully, two weeks ahead... It does not seem possible that frost can come early enough to nip any of it... On Monday, a small field of tobacco in the city of Westby was harvested, the first to get the axe in this vicinity... Old growers tell us it is the earliest date of harvesting tobacco in the history of the county.

POSTOFFICE HELD UP
Our new postmaster, C.A. Minshall, had a most harrowing experience when he took over the affairs of the office Saturday morning. He got on the job at seven o’clock, and a few seconds after heard several revolver shots in the lobby. Rushing to the window and throwing it up he looked into the menacing muzzle of a 45-calibre six-shooter, with the command “stick ‘em up,” ringing in his ears. Oh, certainly, you guessed it the first time. The man behind the gun was Otto Brown.
C.J. Kuebler & Son have purchased from Ole Kjos the building now occupied by them as a tire shop. Mr. Kjos gets the Kuebler house in the northwestern part of the city in the deal.
Kuebler & Son plan to completely remodel the building and make it into a modern business place, and will lower the first floor to the level of the sidewalk.
Save money and be sure to get all the Dixie Gem coal you will need for this winter, by leaving your order now with C.I. Colman Lumber Co.
Victory, August 3 – Sam Suiter lost a cow one day last week... A. Tolloch is rebuilding his tobacco shed which was blown down by a heavy wind sometime ago... The Ku Klux Klan gave a lecture here on the school ground, last Friday evening... A large number of people took in the excursion on the Capitol last Saturday.
Westby, August 8 – A deal was consummated last week whereby J.M. Fremstad purchased the grocery department of the Ramsland Bros. and took possession on August 1. Ramsland Bros. are moving their dry goods into the Anderson furniture store next door and will in the future conduct a dry goods store and ready to wear department.
