JAN. 26, 1921
Plans for the new Mason’s Temple commenced to take on definite form when at last Wednesday evening’s meeting the finance committee reported that if the brethren would all do their part the erection of a temple to cost about $100,000 could be financed.
Dr. A.L. Myrick, DeSoto, Wisconsin wishes to announce to the public that he has opened newly equipped office rooms in the old Beardsley building just across the street from the Bay State Hotel. He has also secured telephone connections with both the Badax and Rush Creek telephone companies.

The City Council Doings; Viroqua, Wisconsin, December 28, 1920. Alderman offered the following resolution which on second of Alderman Larsen was unanimously passed on roll call. Resolved, by the city council of the city of Viroqua as follows, that of the several bids for drilling the new well that the bid of R.L. Baley & Son of Hillsboro, is hereby declared to be the lowest and best bid received...
Saturday morning the Milwaukee train punched a car of coal off the end of the side track between Boyle’s sheds onto the side walk. A crew of men finally got the car back on the rail Tuesday.

BUD STORE HAS CLOSE CALL
The Bud store experienced a close call Monday morning, when it caught fire from an overheated stove pipe. W.B. Gilman, proprietor of the store, was at breakfast at the time – smelling smoke the family ran down into the store, discovering the blaze. The neighbors were hurriedly summoned and by quick work saved the old structure with comparatively little damage.
The showing of Viroqua creamery for the year 1920 will be indeed most gratifying to its 625 farmer share-holders. Its total business for the year... is $532,243.78. 2,694,083 pounds of cream were received from which 923,082 pounds of butter were manufactured.

Jefferson town payers are called upon to cough up $52,716.12, and Treasurer A.E. Gronning says he believes it is the first time that his town has gone ahead of Viroqua in the matter of taxes.
Readstown, January 17 – The Standard Oil Co. is making preparations for putting in a supply station here, some of the tanks having already been unloaded... County Superintendent Sanford and a state inspector observed the work in our schools Tuesday...

Harmony – Hanson Ridge, January 8 – There has been a quite a lot of illness around the county but we are thankful that so far there have been no flu... The hum of aeroplanes is heard every day and the chickens do not appear quite so frightened at the large bird as in the beginning.
Readstown – Jan. 10 – Robert Ward is having a furnace installed in his building on Main street, and will soon start a restaurant... This village is experiencing an epidemic of mumps. About one-half of the school children are confined to their homes on account of the disease. Two of the teachers are afflicted likewise... The time has been changed on the Kickapoo road so as to give us three trains a day instead of four. The freight goes up one day and back the next.
The person leaving the sack of oats at Henry’s Grocery for the rural carrier on Route 4, will please make himself known so that the sack may be returned and he be thanked for the same.
Tobacco business is just booming these days. All the local packing houses are receiving heavy deliveries, and running full crews... Buyers are nibbling at the unsold remnant of the crop, prices ranging from 20 to 30 cents per pound. The Lorillard Company paid 40¢ for what is probably the finest crop of tobacco raised in Wisconsin this year – the Gunerius Brothers’ crop.
A 50¢ chicken supper will be served at the Congregational church on Thursday, January 30th, from 5:30 until all are served.

Viroqua city seems rather desolute [sic] with practically all the youngsters back at their respective schools after enjoying the Christmas vacation at home.
Photographer M. J. Jasperson has added a fine National cash register to his studio.

The Viola tobacco warehouse opened Monday morning. They will run a crew of fifty sizers and have a long run.
Gene Henry had a close call when a car backfired on him at Clark’s garage, the crank striking him at the base of the nose inflecting a deep and painful wound.
At next Sunday evening’s meal, the Unique will serve oysters any style – fried, scalloped, cocktails, stews or raw.
Westby Times – The Times relates the almost unbelievable happening that the Southeastern pulled into that station with a “hot box” Christmas eve. The first time it was ever guilty of that we dare say.
Syvert H. Sherpe has raised tobacco on one piece of land for 41 years, and his seven-acre crop this year brought him about $4000.
LaFarge Enterprises – Monday morning the armature of the generator at the power plant burned out making it necessary to ship the entire away for repairs. This means a big loss to the company and much inconvenience to the public. It is said that service cannot be resumed for thirty days.
