APR 25, 1923

Delivery of ice in Viroqua will start next Monday, April 30th. A good man – Harry Curtis – has been secured as deliveryman. He is instructed to give you courteous and efficient service.

Joy awaits the disciples of Izaak Walton next week Tuesday for on that day the trout season opens and many Viroqua anglers are planning to spend the day on the streams here and north of Sparta. The bag limit is 35 each day, and not less than 7 inches long.

Chaseburg, April 23 – Spring is here at last and farmers around here have already started seeding... The county road workers have moved their machinery and barracks over into Chipmunk Coulee and will start work at once... Frank Rach has sold his farm and will work on the county road... George Grosskopf and George Hohlfeld are building a new blacksmith shop in Chaseburg, the foundation being all ready started.

Readstown, April 23 – 12,000 fish fry were received at this station last Friday evening and were placed in various streams in this locality.

Donny Carr has resigned his position as clerk at the office of the local Tobacco Pool. He will take up his former work at the filling station of the Standard Oil Company in this city.

Domestic Science food sale at Henry’s grocery store on Tuesday, May first, from 4 until 5:30 p.m.

TREE PLANTING CAMPAIGN

Chairman Stewart has secured a plentiful supply of hard and soft maple and elm trees at the very low price of forty cents each. The city will set these trees free of charge to the property owner...

APR 18, 1923

One of Viroqua’s landmarks will soon be a thing of the past, workmen now being engaged in wrecking the old fire station. Fire Truck Driver Hall has moved into the old Suttle house until the fine new fire house is completed. Certainly no one will regret the disappearance of the old shack which has long sheltered our fire fighting equipment.

On Saturday, April 28th, at one o’clock at the new high school site, east of the present school location, the four houses and two barns now located on the block recently purchased for school purposes will be offered for sale at auction.

With the coming of sunny days and mild-weather, the local fans are getting the base ball bug as usual, and Manager Schrode has called a practice for Sunday afternoon at the City Park Diamond. Every man who can play ball, or thinks he can, is invited to come out and try for a place on the team.

Four car loads of Pool tobacco was shipped from DeSoto Thursday.

Ed Lind is breaking ground at the rear of his shoe store, and will erect a 20x20 addition, brick and tile construction. The new addition will be used for rebuilding shoes.

The maple sugar season is about at an end in Vernon county... The season has been unusually long, commencing about the middle of March. While the camps have enjoyed a full month of sap collecting yet no more than the normal crop of juice has been collected due to abnormally cold weather retarding the flow.

APR 11, 1923

The past week has been no exception to the general weather of the past two months – snow, sleet, and freezing temperature. But there is an end to all things and as the Censor goes to press something like a semblance of spring weather has set in – and here’s hoping it is permanent for winter certainly lingered in the lap of spring long enough to satisfy even an Eskimo.

Last Saturday, April 7th, the ice moved out of the Mississippi river at LaCrosse on its annual pilgrimage toward the gulf.

White lead and linseed oil are both up, but our pure ready mixed house paint has not gone up, let us figure your job. O.E. Davis Druggist.

The Kickapoo valley is with mail service again on account of the high water, the flood having reached its highest stage Tuesday... An attempt was made to bring mail across from Boscobel by team but had to be abandoned on account of the condition of the roads.

The roads sure are bad. George Amann came up from his home near Victory on Friday. He selected horseback as the only reasonable mode of travel.

Viroqua Co-operative Creamery is highly gratified over the wonderful showing...during the month of March. March was anything but favorable month...the many blizzards which swept this section during the month could not help but lower milk production while the blocked roads retarded delivery of the cream...the Viroqua creamery made a gain of more than six tons of butter over March of 1922.

APR 4, 1923

The Tobacco Pool won the injunction suit tried last week in the Circuit Court at Madison. Judge Werner in his decision held that the Pool is constitutional, and is entitled to a Permanent Injunction restraining the M.H. Bekkedal Company of Westby from soliciting or buying tobacco from Pool members. The decision is most gratifying to the Pool and its 7,500 members...

The school officials of Viroqua district have closed up the deal for the new school site papers being made out Monday, and the property is now officially in the name of the district.

The weather man smiled upon Easter Sunday and although a little chilly it was the warmest and most pleasant day we have had for a long time.

Spring election on Tuesday of this week was a very quiet affair, due to the absence of contests on state offices. Not more than a quarter of the vote registered last primary election day was out.

Farmers Attention! The Westby Cooperative Exchange will take in stock every other Tuesday in the future instead of every week as has been the custom all summer and fall. The next dates will be April 17 and May 1. Bring in your stock on these dates.

About twenty-five ex-soldiers and sailors met Tuesday evening in the Odd Fellows hall and organized the Selmer Brettengen Legion Post No. 372.

Net Tuesday evening, April 12, Viroqua’s new Concert orchestra will put on a dance at Viroqua’s big dance hall for the benefit of the orchestra.
